The issue of patenting and copyright has always been hotly debated since the birth of art. However, some time back, it was acceptable to use other people’s work without necessarily attributing it to them because pundits argued there were no original ideas and hence, all knowledge was shared. This notion has changed over the last few centuries and in the contemporary world, copyright infringement can land you in court. The digital content which has become our way of getting information has been left a step back but with digital content licensing laws in place, things have become normalized even in this area. Though there are still grey areas in digital content licensing these have been caused by the fast paced nature of the digital world and not any inherent weakness.

For one to fully appreciate why digital content licensing is an issue today there is the need to have a look at how the internet has changed our way of life more so in sharing information. A few years ago, any researcher had to go to a library and pore over tomes and tomes of books in search of some information. However, the internet has changed all this; all one needs to do is log into the internet and within a few minutes, all the information one needs will be there. What’s more, the interment technology has made it very easy to filter through the relevant details and this is where the problem lies. Digital content licensing does not only affect the originator of the information but also the user. Previously, it was obvious that you had to contact a publisher to get the copyright license but with digital content, most people are ignorant about such details.

So, how does a researcher or even the average internet user avoid the pitfalls of digital content licensing laws? The answer is two pronged; firstly, the owner of the digital content must be aware of the copyright laws to ensure their work is secure. Some areas such as designing might require a patent to avoid infringement issues and all this can easily be acquired by getting a qualified solicitor. When the content is covered by the copyright laws, the users must be alerted duly for them to seek the licensing before any sage of the content. Some of the material found online is taken for granted for example music downloads but with the laws slowly catching up, the idea of digital content licensing has become a reality. If you use regular downloads, you must be very keen when agreeing to the terms because this might land you in trouble. The same applies to those who own the content as they must ensure digital content licensing doesn’t limit access to their materials.

The digital content has always been taken for granted but it is now obvious that this has changed tremendously. More and more people are getting hooked to the internet and even the popular classics, be it in literature or music, have become digitalized. Digital content licensing is the only way of ensuring that digital content lives because if it becomes free for all, soon there won’t be any valuable content.
